Vulcan Burners announce hydrogen project involvement

September 13, 2023

Vulcan Burners announce participation for hydrogen fuelled trials for asphalt production.

Vulcan Burners is delighted to be involved in the Bay Hydrogen Hub – Hydrogen4Hanson Scheme with the development and supply of an innovative burner system suitable for asphalt production at Hanson’s Criggion Asphalt Plant.

Vulcan Burners is part of a consortium made up of EDF, Hanson UK and National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). After this week’s announcement from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s commitment of £6.1m funding towards the project along side the project partners match funding, the project totals over £15m.

The hub’s pilot project aims to use nuclear power derived hydrogen from Heysham 2 Power Station in Lancashire to replace the mix of fossil fuels currently used in asphalt production. The ground-breaking project aims to demonstrate zero-emission asphalt production using nuclear power derived hydrogen for the first time anywhere in the world.

The £6.1 commitment by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to support the Bay Hydrogen Hub, pledged today means that the trial could be up and running by early 2024.

Teresa Lewis, Managing Director Vulcan Burners said: “The development of a hydrogen powered burner for the processing of asphalt is an exciting challenge and a significant milestone in our company’s commitment to providing a solution to pave the way to net zero within the asphalt industry.”

About the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP)

The Industrial Hydrogen Accelerator Programme provides funding for innovation projects that can provide evidence on end-to-end industrial fuel switching to hydrogen, from feasibility through to demonstration. It is part of the government’s £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, which provides funding for low-carbon technologies and systems. Decreasing the costs of decarbonisation, the Portfolio will help enable the UK to end its contribution to climate change.
